Wink Stupid Horn

I was driving on my lunch break today and stopped at a pedestrian crossing when 3 ultra hot babes happeded to walk across infront and wave at me. Well just after they passed I went to give them a little toot, and what happens - the bloody horn gets stuck on!!! and I'm driving off and everytime I honk the horn it turns off then keeps getting stuck on.

Why does this happen and how can I fix it...

man... this happend to my AU, i still havent fixed it... same thing happend to me, i went to give a chick a toot and the bloody thing stayed on. i had to punch the horn pad really hard to get it to stop, then jumped out and disconnected the horn wires.

apprently its a big $ job to fix, The horn Pad, which i believe is under the airbag is broken or something like that.let me know what you find out!

mmm, i thik it has more to do with how the horn makes contact with the conductor - some cars use a peice of bent metal, and it its weak and stays bent and connected after you depress the horn, it stays on - i dunno - have to remove the wheel and see.

iirc to do the horn on the AU you have to replace the clock spring mechanism, and that puppy aint cheap

Same thing happened to my car, except I was on Drakeford drive (3 lanes wide) in the middle lane. Couldn't get the horn to stop, except by disconnecting it at the actual horn in the front bar.

Anyway, to fix it, I took the airbag off and disconnected the horn wires from the horn pad, and installed a momentary switch (ie only on when you press it). The switch basically sits under the horn pad on the RHS - near where the horn symbol is on the airbag. My airbag also has a hole in it from where i drilled through the vinyl for the first little switch I used.

I've been quoted around $350 for a new airbag/horn pad assembly from the wreckers. Well, not new, second hand, but new to me.

lol - mine happened at melrose drv, at those new lights inbetween bp and BMW. I'll have to take it off and have a look - stupid crap - of all things to go, something little, yet so much money. Maybe it's my habit of punching the horn with my fist because it's padded.

JC, thats such a good idea...

can you tell me what parts i need to buy from d!ck smiths, and maybe a little tutorial on exactly which wires too hook up.. its proven dangerous on heaps of occaisions already!

i had this one problem in my old ED where when you would get on the brake, the horn would go off. HAHAHA it was so funny, driving up to the neighbours, hands out the window, horn going off!!!

Rob - it's not a mod/fix for the faint hearted. I did it by pulling up one corner of the airbag (I think). Anyway, here goes nothing:

1. Just get a square plastic momentary switch from Dicksmiths (I got a blue button, but colour doesn't matter as you won't see it). The one I got is about 5mm by 5mm.
2. Remove the airbag/horn pad assembly from the steering wheel (after disconnecting battery).
3. There is a connector attached to the underside of the airbag with 2 wires. Cut the 2 wires as far away from the connector as you can (sort of where they disappear into the air bag assembly).
4. Connect the wires to the switch (doesn't matter which side goes where). I soldered mine and used heat shrink to prevent short circuit
5. Hold the switch in position somehow. I used 2 tiny screws to sort of pinch the switch into 2 vinyl/rubber tabs.

You should be able to activate the switch by pressing to the right of the real horn pad on the RHS of the wheel. Unfortunatly, the LHS won't work, but I guess you could put a matching switch that side as well and just connect the wires to the other switch.

Yoy. 2 years 9 months. But well done loilam for using the search function. That has to be a record yes ? If it helps, i have a ol' skool Klaxon on my AU at the moment. If that get's stuck on im stuffed.
