Blanking out Number Plates in photos posted

Hi Folks,

I am sure this question has been covered before and any number of various threads.

What is the deal with blanking out number plates of cars in photos posted. Some people do it others dont. Is there any merit to actually doing it (blanking out the number plate).

Personally I am not worried, I am not doing anything illegal with my car at the time of having photos done, and if you are I suppose you get what you deserve posting it up in a public forum.

And I doubt the validity of it being a security thing (to stop people identifying your car for theft at a later date) because if someone wants your car they are going to find it if you like it or not (especially when most people put their suburb in their Avatar info).

Just intrested to know if there is a valid reason for it?

a few reasons;

Stop possible deny of warranty when you have done mods

So you cant be found, if someone knows your mods, see's your plate, the may decide they WANT your car.

I cant think of anything else.

well I thinks its a bit of an over reaction, but I do it anyway, only takes a couple of secs.

as for people modding there cars and sooking about warranty, perhaps they should mod them in the first place.

Thats like when i had posted my mobile number on a website. Everyone was like omg what a noob posting his mobile number here. oh no, whats everyone going to do, CALL ME!?!

I dont see a point to blanking out plates. Unless you really dont want someone to know who you are or something.

It's one small step to prevent something happening to your car or *maybe* identity. If you show your rego you're advertising your details essentially to anyone who is smart enough to be able to fish em out.

If this thread is in response to cams GTP, then that case still could of happened even if the plates were not shown.

Yeah I know, but it is one less way of making it easier. Just like an alarm is very unlikely to stop your car getting stolen, but people still get them.

mods=insurance void on most these cars maybe? whom knows
plates=unwanted police attention?whom knows
plates=criminal whom wants your go fast bits or possibly your entire ride?whom knows

some ppl just dont want their plates posted and want privacy etc

others opinions may vary from the above

Pretty much privacy of each individual I reckon. Some want it some don't. Up to you. But I do agree with the comment about it being 1 small step to keeping your pride and joy safe at home in your garage.

But without the numberplate it probably wouldnt have been used.

rubbish...you could photo shop one easy, or just say that it doesn't come with reg as he wants to keep some personalised plates that were on it

Look at most of the scams on ebay with cars... all have numberplates... why would they go to the trouble of photoshopping when there are plenty of other pics cars to choose from!

i personally couldnt care less who has seen my plates or not, if someone REALLY wants my cars, then they can take them, i will just get them replaced through insurance, no big deal.

I have posted pics with my plates blanked out, and other times with them showing, guess it just depends on how much the care factor is cranking at the time.

Id say thats gives every reason to keep your plate visable.
If it wasnt, then GTP200 would have been none the wiser and not to mention that type of crime would go un-noticed until it was too late and some poor bugger was ripped off.

But, in the end it is up to the individual. Do what you feel.

Another thing you have to realise is, if someone wants to steal your car they'll do it.

If they are smart enough search the internet and get your plates off a forum or other such website.
Then hack the Motor Registry's data base and track your car down to your home or work place, then what the hell difference does it make. You cant stop PRO's.

You can only do your best to prevent something happening. Theres no stopping it.

I'm a member of another forum (Jeep)

One of our members who is heavily involved in the preservation movement had his vehicle displayed in a magazine.

The president of the pedestrian council (H**** S****) seen the article, rang his mate at the RTA, gave him his rego number and they paid a visit to his house, then defected his vehicle.(even though he had a engineering certificate)

I guess here lies a lesson, if your vehicle is modified then blank out the number plates, you don't know who is looking.

It the same as posting your car doing burnouts etc.

I blocked out my old std number plates. But my new ones I wont not much use when its the same as my username :P

$25 at the D.O.T gets you a persons address if you know the license plate, so be warry of who you pi$$ off.. THis is why I dont have personalised plates.. Its too easy for people to remember your car.
A 2 minute phonecall to the D.O.T inspectors if you have a redgo number leads to a 'please present vehicle' notice coming in the mail for someone

WTF...can any random go up to the DOT and get your details...

All you need to say is they ran after an accident and you can sign a form to state that and get details.

Hell For $80 a private investigator will find ANYONES details.
