Default Best Drag Car Body...

Alright, I've got a couple of nice cars lying around. I can't bring myself to cut them up for blowers, tubs, etc. Well that and the price of petrol makes me think doing a dedicated off street drag car might be the best option. So I'm throwing around a few ideas.

What do you think is the best ford base for a budget build drag car. Criteria being,

*Something light, cheap horsepower and easy towing
*Easy to drop in a V8 with minimal mods to the engine bay and tunnel
*Strong rigid body that will require minimal structural work

I would like to do something other than a Falcon. I was thinking along the lines of an older cortina or escort.

capri is probably the most common option (other than Torana)

what about a Valiant/Chrysler Centura?

It's gotta be a capri, if your not worried about reg set the engine back 4" make up some huge custom pipes, 8's have been done on the 4cyl leafs, any half decent engine will run a number at 2800lbs

Series 1 RX-7 is pretty light and can fit some good engines in there. There are plenty of 351 conversion kits for them.

Thanks for the feeback. Capri might be the go. Is there anything later model, just for something different I'm thinking. I think I seen a 351 TX5 or something in the pits once.

TC-TF Cortinas are the way to go. 'C's and 'D's have plenty of room for Clevo with pipes, but the 'E's and 'F's are just a bit tight in the extractor department.
look at this though it can be done

Most people just cut the inner guards and hang a set of pipes out that way. I will do that once the new motor is built.

Mazda RX-7.

You can fit anything in them. 350, 351, LS1.

The same with the Datsun Z cars. Although Id shed a tear if you started cutting one of them up. Theyre getting rare enough for good ones as it is.

If you want it to be a ford, a Capri or Cortina would probably be the go. Other wise a Charger with a turbo hemi 6 or big block hemi would kick *** down the strip. And you could get it registered if you wanted!

I'm pretty certain I want to stick with the Ford theme. Only for the fact that I've got a garage full of parts already. That and I can interchange the bits with my street cars. No plans on getting this car registered. Already paying four rego's. I think I'll go with an early capri, cortina, or escort.

I don't want to spend a fortune on my first drag car. If I decide to get further into drag racing then I'll spend a few more dollars and build something like this. A Ford Probe would be better...

Build a big car. Starting to get tired of seeing small cars on the track. Remember: anyone can make a light car fast.

Conversely, anyone can build a big engine.

Do both small car+ big engine, the lighter car will always come out on top, it'll 60' better, be easier on the drivline, now if only a capri was easy to make handle well on the circuit :
