Hey all.
Found out that my right low beam is out and need a new globe. I went out to KMart and saw some Autotechnica Xenon H4 60/55 for $25 (For a pair). So I grabbed these and took them home. I have to fit them tomorrow... I know that the Xenon's are brighter then normal lights, but on the AU (non-XR), how much brighter are they? Noticable.... Really noticable??

They are brighter and more importantly they are whiter. They look fantastic.

Most people say they are crap, but i think they are great, they highlight signs and the reflective line marking extremely well and dont highlight the crap you dont need (ie dust/rain). I dont know about Autotechnica, but ive got Phillips Crystal Visions in my low and parkers (4300k) and Osram Silverstars (Not 'xenon' type bulbs) for distance on the highbeam.

I found they where ok but when in the rain they didnt perform as well. Something about the light they emit in the wet isn't as good as the normal orange light. Xenon kits can be purchased cheaply now around $200 and work well in both light and dark. I got a pic of them on and they work very well compared to normal lights and work very well in the wet.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y67/au2/sun3.jpg http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y67/au2/sun4.jpg I found the other thing with the fake bulbs is they look tacky they emit a white/faded blue light and look cheap. The real ones look white without that 'fake' tinge in them they only seem to go blue if you hit bumps but I think that is also caused by the projector cut off point. Also another thing I found was the worst bulbs where the supercheap ones & narva artic blue ones while the best fake bulbs seemed to be the phillips

Pictures of headlights? I'll try...
Ok... here are some... all I can say is that the pictures don't do any justice... With the results, I might replace the high beam (H1) globes too... watch out! The globe itself.... Headlight assembly with globe... Pure Evil.... Here you can see how the colour is slightly different (green), and how the xenon globe is more white then the (yellowish) highbeam light....

$25 a pair is the normal price (for this brand) - you can also get them at Supercheap for the same price....

I bought the Autic ones from eBay, H4 & H1, and they are great. I am also fitting yellow foggies to the car for those rainy/foggy days we get in Canberra, as the blue lights certainly aren't great in those conditions - which is I guess why manufacturers use the yellower light standard.

Can you get these for the AU XR's, I've been looking for some new globes for the XR but I'm unsure what to get, why don't they work well in rain, I want something that is going to work in the rain and is better than the original globes, any reconmendation's.

a globe with a "blue" hue will work fine in rain, better then any yellow orientated light.
Yellow only comes into play in fog, low light, hazey and generally low contrast invironments. if you want more info Send me PM you'll be after H4 and H1 globes for the XR from memory. look for a bulb that has a quartz envolope and is xenon gas filled. Phillips, osram, narva and IPF is where i would look for quality. Thanks pappa smuf. Chaser, Square fog lights probably aren't the best option, BUT if thats what floats your boat thats cool. If you want lights for your interstate driving, you'd be best looking at some actual driving lights. As the throw and beam pattern of the small square lights typically aren't the best. ORB> |

MOOSEXR6,
The first thing you should do before going out and getting new globs is to make sure your own are aimed properly. Just because you want to be "cool" or look mad or whatever, doesn't give you the right to cause unecessary strain on other drivers eyes. Be responsible, aim your lights properly, you will benenfit not only from increasing the safety of approaching drivers, but 9 times out of 10 you will IMPROVE your own beam pattern thus giving you more useful light. You should look for something with a quartz envolope and xenon gas filling. I recomend philips "power2night" and Narva Plus 50 range. Go after good quality, ie recognised manufactures, have a read of the site i posted. And when you do get them make sure you AIM THEM PROPERLY!!!!!! Most cars you drive past that "dazzel" you are using headlights that aren't aimed properly. |

G'day all, I have these on the XR and they're good as, I can't remember the brand name but am leaning toward the Narva I think. Took me a little while to get used to them as for me they're not noticible around street lamps but geez they're magic on the open road and coming up the long driveway I have.

Cannot stress enough about correctly aimed headlights. To many cars these days seriously need to correct the aim and beam spread. It reduces the annoyances to other drivers and also gives you the best possible light for driving.
Combine this with some good quality bulbs and you will end up with more light and less eye strain for you and other drivers. |

Hey Orbit,
Thanks for your advice on the brighter globes. I will definitely have a closer look at the current alignment. As for looking "cool" or "mad", I don't think so :-) I think in my case mate, it's got more to do with my silver hair and growing older!!!! |

I have been testing this lately in the projector headlights in the AU that I bought off The Dok ... and I have found the good old Narva Plus 50 globes to be the better globe out of several I have tried.
But then again it might be a projector headlight itself compared to the reflector headlight. Even the standard cheap stock globes were brighter and much better clarity than the "you beaut" Phillips Blue Vision ADR approved blue/white lights. If anyone wants a literally brand new set of H1 55W Phillips Blue Vision globes with blue parking lights ... you can buy then CHEAP off me. I have taken then out as I have found them quite dull .. and not very clear at all. With the extensive testing I have done on dark country roads ... because I have to drive them everynight going home ... and with several different globes in them ... the Narva Plus 50s excel ... they just don't look so pretty as the nice rice blue lights. The only things that will outperform then are a complete HID conversion kit ... which is illegal and causes a hell of a lot of glare for oncoming vehicles .... massive defect ... and you get a lot of annoyed driver's out there. I know ... I used to have them in the old reflector headlights ... and now that I have gone projector ... i really only need halogen globes now. The only different colour globes I will be putting in my Territory and my AU ute are PIAA Ion Crystal yellow globes in the fog lights ... and that's all.
