Default P-plates at 17yo (VIC)

hey guys,

for those of you in VIC, just heard off a friend of mine that he got his P's and he is only 17. the legal age in VIC is 18.

His story is that he travelled to SA and got his P's there, and came back to VIC and he rekons its legal to drive. apparently all you need is a bank account and a family member living in SA.

Surely its cheating the system? opinions?

cheers,

brad

I'm pretty sure you have to say you're living there. what just causes more drama's.

I hope it's not the case because I have a family member in NSW you can get your p's there at 17 too.

Well If SA gave him his P's then I would think that its all legal. But I thought you had to live in the state.

My mate also done this, he had some family in Adelaide he got pulled over a few times and the cops didn't say anything. He cheated the system but paid for it in the end, he must have gotten too excited he ended up loosing his license before he even turned 18!

My mate got his P's either in WA or SA.. I think he may have even gotten them before 17 (IF that's possible). If not, definently got them at 17.

Had other family or something over there, went over, got his P's etc, came back to vic and has been driving around since!

Lucky bugger.

I'm pretty sure if you have residency in that state (and maybe bank account?) then it's fine.

It is only illegal if he spends more than an average of 4 nights per week in victoria.. but that being said it is very easy to get away with.. and very hard for the authorities to catch you.. i mean in order to bust you they would need to follow you round for 2 weeks..

It is a very common thing here in Albury Wodonga.. So dodgy..

Cheers,
Nik

In the late 60's in NSW , d "5 miles" out of town , you could get a Special Licence" at 16 yrs old to:-

1/ Drive to town for farm business ....eg machinery parts , produce etc

2/ Drive to town or another farm for employment.

3/ Drive to other sections of your property if it was "up the road".

I applied for one of these but missed out ! ! Grrrr , Police measured the distance and it was "4 3/4 miles" to our main gateway. I was advised to "get a horse" . : (but still drove the truck/tractor 1/2 mile to one of our blocks....) Funniest part about this , the cop who knocked me back was working for us on his day off ? ? ? at that particular block ...when I turned up in the truck. He just said to me "don't tell me , I don't want to know about it"
Great guy , but he was only doing his job.

My Dad did the same at 18 to get his semi trailer licence, then came back to Sydney, and swapped it over. Had to be 21 at the time to get the same licence here.

It is cheating, but if you have the documents to make it look like you live there, they're not going to watch you to see if you're telling the truth, doubt they can prove otherwise.

its legal, my mate got a nsw licence and he is 17 (in vic) all he had to do was go there and get it and he had a friend say that he had been staying there for at least 3 months, which he had'nt so yer its a bit dodgey but the cops cant prove anything if he gets pulled up, he has a legit licence so thats it. I have also heard of a friend coming from the NT and driving at 16 i think it was, im pretty sure he had to do some test thing to make sure that he was a good driver, but yer he got to keep driving around.

It'd be pretty hard to prove, without them following him around.

IF they could prove it, they'd probably cancel the licence, and make him wait until he could get them in Vic.

Back in my Dad's day (he is 64), they just rocked up to a cop station on their 16th birthday, sat a basic test and got their full licence on the day.

Back when I did it here in SA, I went and passed my Ls on my 16th birthday and booked the test for my Ps two weeks later (2 weeks minimum between passing Ls and sitting for Ps). Passed my Ps (driving test) at 16 and 2 weeks. Was on full licence one year later at 17 and two weeks. And funnily enough, while I wasnt a slow driver, I wasnt a massive menace to society on the road as they now make young people out to be. And everyone who was my age did the same thing, and they werent menaces either! Funny that.

Glad Im not young and in Vic now! I think that all the time involved getting a full licence just makes young people hang out more and they probably go sillier on the roads because of all the waiting and carrying on!

I feel sorry for the Vics, especially since the P platers get harrassed by the cops BIG TIME from what Ive heard too! And its much easier to get defected over there too!

Shows how screwed the whole drivign system is in Australia.
We were meant to have a unified road rules in 2002, but somehow it has all changed back.
I do not know why we bother having nice cars, licenses or rego, there seems to be people finding ways around everything.

Yes i hate VIC rule's:@

i tried everything to get my P's early. not for the fact of being able to drive but for my job

beeing a 2nd year bricky and not haveing a license is really hard trying to get to job's on time. never in the same place for more then 2 week's is just a pain do you'r allway's on the go. i recon the system screwed i mean Johnny H want's more tradey's. but wont make it easy

my mum's friend's son got his a few week's be for he was 18 on the base's were you could get you'r p's earlyer because of you'r job. e.g tradey

but wen i rung VICRoad's up thay recon there was no sutch policy:P

o well only 6 more week's till im on the road. so i guess il just wait

im going to wait until im at a legal age before i get my P's.

1. to avoid being caught under-age

2. because i will be a lot more mature and more experienced to be allowed to drive independently

This might irk the young wannabe licence holders but I reckon the minimum age for driver licencing should be 21. Kids are far too "raw" in the head and by 21, the brain has ripened a little.

SA still has the VORT test as an option over the log book. I'm not entirely sure what the consequences are should your friend be caught, possibly a fine and/or disqualification. Maybe even charges for falsifying documentation in the worst case scenario. The Vics seem to be good at find that scenario too. :P

Hmm.. Consequences... Lets see to start with there would be fraud.. providing false documentation.. then that would lead down the road of driving with out a licence etc etc... and you usually have to sign a form stating you are living at the address and that all information provided is true and accurate...

One guy i knew a few years ago was living in Perth then moved back here but left his licence and rego at his old address in WA.. Got busted big time when cops caught him doing a burn out.. they knew his car and that he had been around for longer than 3 weeks.. they cut his licence up.. he got $1500 in fines and they confiscated his car for 3 months..

Last i heard he had just got off his L's again..

Cheers,
Nik
