The State Government in conjunction with the Victoria Police are trialing new Number Plate Recognition Cameras. These cameras record number plates and instantly check them against Vic Roads’ and the police’s databases to instantly recognise unregistered and stolen motor vehicles. What they haven’t told us is that the system can also tell the police if the registered owner of the vehicle has any outstanding fines or warrants. I think the Queensland Police had a similar type of camera in operation a few years ago. Something new to look out for.
Cheers, Danny

I saw these on today tonight or ACA (cant remember exactly) the other night. They put 4 cameras in an american police car and drive it around town. The cameras face all different angles so they can pick up upto 10,000 numberplates per hour. If a stolen car is detected then an alarm sounds and the car is recovered. I quite liked the sound of it.

How long before it gets misused, want to be pulled up fined because your dog license is 2 days overdue. Safety-T-Cam technology has operated on the hume for several years using similar technology it was introduced to control heavy vehicles driving for excessive periods and do some checking for stolen and unregistered vehicles. Bracks has already made attempts to hijack Safety-T-Cam as a speed revenue device. Unless a clear statement of procedure and some leisaltive guidlines are made public we should be voicing objections. |

Everything from unpaid fines, suspended drivers and unregistered vehicles.. There have been 2 articles now in the west Australian newspapers & from memory out of 15,000 plates that were scanned, there was 700 odd infringements given. whilst they stopped you for whatever reason, They checked out your cars road worthyness. A good reason why i dont drive to Scarbourgh etc anymore, Black & loud attracts the wrong attention sometimes.

soooo the moral of the story would be:
if youre going to drive an unregistered car, make sure you fit some paid up plates, from someone that doesnt have any unpaid fines??? :

I for one have driven through Safe-T-Cam (cough - Greed-E-Cam more like it) at way above the limit many times - no photo. I've driven through them over the limit in a truck. No photo. In fact, I've driven through them at way earlier than my check-in time and no photo as well. They often don't work anyhow and anyone half smart knows that at night they can be beaten easily. Why do you reckon so much traffic runs overnight? Yes, schedule and business for sure, but time also has its influence. Sorry, but Greed-E-Cam is not all its made out to be. Those truly involved in its development recently stated publicly that they regret how it is underfunded, not properly maintained, and has been hijacked by the RTA coats for purposes it wasn't intended for. As for NPR cameras, in the ACT they ran out of romm to park all the cars during the first days of the trial. Good stuff. but as usual unroadworthy cars with steel hanging out of the tyres go unnoticed as long as the ydrive at or under the limit and are registered. WOFTAM. |

Know a bit about the inner workings of Safe-T-Cam Do we? I can see how you'd pick up lots of tech data driving under them regularly. Quote:

So don't discount the potential of these things to cost you big time, they do work and the RTA aren't interested in using them for safety, revenue thats another story. If you smelt excrement there is probably something on your boots, dont get any on the carpet will you! : Last edited by RED_EL_XR8; 18-03-2005 at 12:42 AM. Reason: all my jibes are now subliminal |
