Know something about VWs?

I got a 66 VW with almost no rust on the weekend and am planning on doing a custom job on it. plans involve some sort of porsche engine, probly a turbo.

anywho, wondering if anyone knew a good VW forum/has any tips on the restoration?

I had a 72 type 3 for my first car and always wanted to put a carrera 4 turbo driveline in it if i had the cash. When i had it, i was in about year 10, now a good 5 or 6 years ago, i found a flat 6 turbo porsche motor with a 100 horses shot of nos that was being advertised as a VW conversion. Pity they wanted around 10k for it, i would have loved that. Good luck with the plans, im keen to see the outcome

Theres been a couple of quick flat 4's, but apart from Herbie, Ive never seen one handle.

Subaru 4cylinder turbo boxer motor is all you need!

or a rotary ie 13b turbo

both make for wicked VW fun
my brothers old boss had a kombi van with a subaru 2.2 non turbo.. it still lifted the front wheels off the ground without the turbo

Go buy VW Australia/Hot VW'S(US) at your local newsagent, get ready for a shock because to do a mild HP motor will cost the same as V8 ! If you just want a cruiser keep it stock.I had a 54 oval/57 oval,two 62 beetles,67/68 type 3 station wagons and a 63 split window kombi van! They are heaps of fun if you learn to work on them (very basic) they get exspensive at a mechanic's hourly rate, just keep the oil clean valves adjusted and the timing spot on and it will go forever!.

I did a 911 Turbo conversion into a old kombi. It was the split window model.
The guy who owned it was drunk and smashed his porsche into a pole headon and had no insurance. He bought the kombi and asked my workshop to do the conversion.
It was not difficult as they are aircooled and not EFI.
The thing went like a rocket, we had the wrecked 911 to pull parts off and had it as a long term project. Took about 6 months, but the thing was a rocket in a straight line. It would lift the front wheels about 10cm of the ground under WOT.
It stopped ok with the 911 brakes, but nothing could be done to make the brick handle.

I recommend you sell the VW to someone who will love the car and not butcher it, they are a rare classic now.

A 911 Turbo motor will cost you over $15k + gearbox +++ and it will still be a VW with a turbo porsche motor and will never return you any money.
