Firstly RICE.
But really as it reads they are fine as long as white doesn't face to the rear and red doesn't face to the front. They are also not allowed to be of a distraction to other road users.

yeah my understanding is that no lights other than the headlights tail/brake or indicator lights are allowed (unless you have a permit to use roof mounted coloured lights). Even front mounted auxhillary lights are kind of a grey area....

and if the law doesn't get you, i will!

Ok.....

Ive looked at this problem many times, Ive even asked cops and got all kinds of answers, Last time i was pulled over asked "Is it actually illegal to have undercar Neons?" reply was "No not that i Know of"

Unfortunatly, Alot of the cops seem to be unsure weather it is or not, as ive asked at police stations aswell and get alot of "Umm hmmm..." kinda answers.

I believe its illegal, along with Auxillery lights on your roof unless you have a permit and then they still hassle you. Its like those WiperWasher LED things, Ive heard of people being pulled over cause of it, and others never bothered.

Its a mystery i tell you

Blue or green underbody neons are legal in VIC. I have a mate who has a printout from a cop stating what is and isn't legal with regards to auxiliary lighting. I will try and get a copy off him and post it here, but if you go to any Police station and ask I am sure they will let you know/print one out for you.

ah bugger neons..just get some of those little orange lights and put 20 on either side of your ute so you can look like a Mack truck..lol

Oh and dont forget the mud flaps that touch the ground!

Seriously though, your asking for trouble IMO. If you put them on and only use it to show off (you'd want to have a nice/quick car) then whatever. But be prepared for some flack if you want to leave them on all the time.

You car, your licence, I wouldn't recommend it.

Maybe the neons would look good on the Nissan/XF ute :alien2:

I thought it was illegal to have them turned 'ON' while the car is in motion, otherwise when stopped would be fine, just like in car TV's.

Well it came off the Police intranet so I guess you could call it a legal doco.

Exactly what i meant in my first post by saying they are legal as long as they don't "distract" other road users. Now try to define distract and you'll see why the cops can and usually wiil do you for them. And I still say RICE!!!

ahah, but what is the definition of distract. A cop can say that an 80yo lady driving will be confused and distracted by neons and hence slap a defect on your window.

oh yeah, and NEONS ARE RICE!!!!

Even more important than anything else, is it legal to have a KNIGHTRIDER Spec (tm) row of red lights the front of my car? I'll set it up with a motion detector, so whenever someone walks past the car the lights will scroll and the car will have that "whoolooo" sound.... then if they try and break in an english voice will say "I don't think thats a good idea"

Anti-theft device ya see

My mates had a chat with the cops, (at several stations in fact) and they all said that it is legal to have undercar neons. The only thing about it is the fact that a lot of people see it as illegal, and as a result, so will a lot of patrol cops.

There is actually nothing in print, (according to the cops) to say that it is illegal, however there is also nothing saying that it is legal also. This is where the ambiguity comes into it, and you'd have cops who will side either way.

RICE!!!! :

You may get unwanted attention from coppers. Even if it's legal they may invoke the "bad taste" clause.

You will be ridiculed by most other road users. Ricers in Hyundais and Lancers may admire you though.

Don't do it!!!

In NSW at least, it is ok to have them so long as they're not turned on while the car is in motion, and that includes at traffic lights etc etc. I dont know about colour restrictions, although i would imagine you would be told to change them if you got red or blue.

Come on now lets get back to using 'RICE' to what it was meant for... The redicule of asian made products and their users :P

Oh wait I'm considering rice as my next car...erm :

Thinking that neons make your car look cool just makes you retarded :

It doesn't have to be in print to be illegal. You can be issued with a ticket because the opfficer suspects it to be illegal and you either pay it or go to court to prove it is safe.

BTW, red 'night rider lights' are illegal to have on the front!

I think this falls under the Vic roads / bad taste / ****er / ricer / clause.
Why would anyone do it? Each to their own I guess.

Cheers, Danny
