Default Look what the stupid RTA told me I couldn't buy...

P Plate Hoon Machine

Well apparently I cant buy this car. Why? "because its a V8 and the RTA is trying to cut the road toll so young drivers are banned from driving high powered vehicles"

its actually a 6.5L V8 Chevy Diesel.
So definately not allowed :

EDIT: I would say even in stock form you couldnt drive it as it was turbo ??
NSW rules are so ghey, i am glad i got my P's when it was 1 year and drive what ya want

Thst's ridiculous. I've read about the cars NSW P-platers can't drive, and there are some real weird ones. You wouldn't be able to drive any turbos either, ruling out all the turbo diesels. Also, you can't drive a Smart car because it has a turbocharged 3 cylinder engine, with nearly 45kW! Talk about high powered! And some of the safest cars on the planet, Volvo and Saab are ruled out because a lot of them are fitted with turbos. This shows how little idea the government has on car safety. Thankfully, in Victoria, they still use power-to-weight ratios to determine which cars a P-plater can drive (but I believe that may be changing to the NSW system). It's just ridiculous

Yep yep, it sucks. Most p platers are going to get to used to driving low powered cars, then soon as they are off their p's, out comes V8's, XR6T's and all that good stuff. With no experience at all.

Yer it is rediculous, but P platers are allowed to drive turbo diesels.

And I think that the Smart is actually exempt, as is the Daihatsu Copen T.

It's still stupid though... Okay so it has a 6.5L V8. That sounds incredibly fast, but the fact that it is a Diesel and more to the point that it is putting the power to ground through a Landrover gearbox (v. v. low ratios) I highly doubt that its fast...

It could probably uproot a small to medium skyscraper, but that dont mean its fast!

interesting... it used to say that Diesels were exempt for turbos / superchargers... now they have just made it all Diesels.

So I suppose that means I CAN have a diesel V8...

And that means the smarmy little indian woman at the RTA was WRONG.

M3 is on the restricted list - don't know bout Lotus Elise.

Whats funny is you can get a motorbike lisence at 16 (L's for 3 months) and then buy a 1000cc sports bike capable of 300km/h+ and 0-100 in under 3 secs at 17 and 3 months. :monkes:

Its 17 and 9 months for learners in Melbourne. Your on them for a year then you get your Ps. Your only aloud a 250 on your P's and Ls though.

Move to SA you could drive a 460 or 454 BB what ever you prefer. (or turbo Big Block if the NA hasnt got enough torque for you) :

I dunno Shonkey about the car itself, it sounds a little dodgy - it's in vic too, and you'd need engineers report for registering it in NSW, then there is the insurance, and defenders aren't extactly reknown for their ergonomics and build quality blah blah blah.....

No engine bay pics either.....

Yer I know... I already have 3 Landys... I don't think I'd be allowed to have another one!

It was more an exercise in RTA idiocracy. Which was compounded when Merlin proved them wrong. Seems they dont know their own policy...

Yer... I love Landys don't get me wrong, but I think post '94 they all turned to crap.

I actually have this arguement with my wife all the time, and I couldn't agree less. P-platers learning to drive on low powered cars is teaching them the basics they need to survive on the road without the added distraction of trying to control a high powered car. Once they get off their P's they have a hell of alot more road experience that when they first got on them.

It's like teaching someone to swim in the shallow end of the pool before throwing them in the deep end.

Bah the rules are stupid, im just thankful im covered under the old rules.

Think this under the new rules i wouldnt be able to buy a uber safe Lexus LS400 or a BA Fairlane V8 (Im thinking of getting one of these), yet i can drive a god awful dangerous VP Commodore V6 on 14" Steelies or a near 190kw sub 7sec Ralliart Magna.

I wholeheartedly disagree with these rules.

Lets say, for instance, that your 17, on your P-plates and dad drives his V8 powered Commodore, and mum drives a Saab. (with a turbo.) Or a Subaru WRX, or a TX3, or a V8 Statesman or Fairlane etc.

Instead of learning to drive in a safe, new, reliable, well maintained car - your parents have to buy you a car (because your a poor student). Enjoy your $500 Mistubishi Colt that's 3/4's rust with dodgy brakes. Much safer than a V8.

It's one thing to not let kids buy and register high-powered vehicles - but to ban them from driving them? And at any rate - most 6 cylinder family cars have more than enough power to get you into trouble.

I love SA.

I think, the RTA thinks it going to hurt and be more of a painful experience slamming into a wall at 140 in a v8, opposed to a I6 :

Everythings lethal "ITS THE WAY ITS USED" Doesnt matter much what you drive but its the way you drive it.

Then again you got a 16yo son who hasnt driven anything in his life and wants to race speedway, Do you A: Buy him a streetsock to learn racecraft in for a year or B: An 800hp 410ci sprintcar??

Exactly.

SPeeding is speeding, and crashing still hurts (not that I would know...)

It dont matter what size engine you have.

And do you think being forced to drive a 4 or 6 cylinder will stop someone from hooning? Hell no.

I consider myself a responsible driver, but I will admit that I do go a bit overboard sometimes. Doesnt matter wether Im driving my 4cylinder Ford Courier on LPG, my I6 ED Ghia or my Phase III (hahaha I wish :()

Lucky I got my licence before all of this. Even if I hadn't, I still wouldn't be phased about the law.

You can get an exemption for these laws in the country and need a V8 petrol 4wd, if you need to drive a high performance car for work signed by your employer, so pretty much all mechanics are exempt. And if you can prove that you had a high performance car before these laws came in.

Write a Letter to Mr Lemma and mr Scully and the head of the RTA and tell them what jerks they are.

1. They have no idea what cars are dangerous.
2. They are here to serve us and not make rediculous decisions.
