Default So, aparently you can hoon whilst sleeping now.

I don't know if there's a thread on this already.. But read in the paper yesterday under a headline of new hoon laws or something, that the Geelong council area is making sleeping in a parked vehicle illegal (amoungst some other things).
I thought it already was anyway, but what's your view on this?
Why is it so dangerous to sleep in a parked car?
And seems a bit contradictory that they say power naps save lives, then make sleeping in your car illegal.. What are you meant to do, jump out and sleep on the road for a while?
I think it sucks, most of the people that sleep in their cars are drunk.. and i'd prefer them to sleep in their cars for the night rather than drive home =/

I would love to see some of these idiots who make these laws up. I think they should encourage it especially when youve had a few too many and also when making long trips.

WTF... why make that illegal. I've done that many a time, and I'd much rather do that then drive really tired and have an accident... even if it were illegal, it'd be one law I'd happily break, if for nothing else but self preservation.

Hmmm.... I seem to remember an ad when I was living in Melbourne. It said "Pull over, have a power nap for 15 minutes. It could save your life." or something to that effect. I guess they now have to change that to "Find a motel, pull over, pay 60 bucks, have a 15 minute power nap, it could save your life".

That is bullschitt. When I used to go out nightclubbing, at the end of the night I'd go to sleep in my car for a few hours before driving home if I was too intoxicated.

I too have slept in the car. Driving back in the middle of the night on two occasions I was too tried to continue driving and would find somewhere to pull over and sleep at for an hour or two. Its a life saver....literally.

That is just stupid, how is sleeping in your car hurting anyone/causing any problems. I know i would rather people sleep in their cars if they are drunk or too tired to drive and i prefer to sleep in my car than to drive under the influence or too tired. Whats next? Your not allowed to breathe while driving as for that split second it removes your concentration from the road.

I'm not sure what the time period is before you can get booked (convicted?) for sleeping, but I have to say I feel for you Aussies with the amount of stupid nanny-state laws over there.

That is just ridiculous for 3 reasons:

1) Fatigue is a huge killer (probably more so than speeding).
2) Drink Driving, is another huge killer...
3) Then you the invasion of civil liberties - who are they to say you cant sleep in your own car which is parked legally.

If I lived in Geelong I would be bombarding the local papers and council with letters regarding the above 3 points.

They may be a number of concerns.

One could be that while asleep you may knock hand brake off or something.
I'd say there would be other reasons.

Very contradicting.

EVERY MALE OVER 21 HERE HAS TO HAVE DONE THIS SOME TIME!!! When you go down to woolworths with the Mrs, and she tells you she is just gonna pop in and will be a few mins. Well us guys know better, so we angle the seat back, put the tunes on low, and have a little bit of shuteye.... lol.

If you got caught sleeping though, what if you said that you fell asleep at the wheel while parking your car, so it was unintentional... lol sleep:

You could just wear those novelty glasses with the big nose, moustache and open eyes with black rim glasses. Then when the council ranger looks in it will look like you are wide awake. :yeees:

I'd be very interested to see what the actual rule is as by your description it sounds pretty stupid.

I know I've grabbed some kip in the car plenty of times when I've been too plastered to drive home or just too tired to continue.

What a ***** rule.

I always hear of the "Stop, revive and survive" stuff, on the TV. Pretty soon it's going to be illegal, to drive a car. _

I'm sure so many people have died because they pulled over to have a powernap :

I know a couple of people who had big car accidents because they fell asleep behind the wheel. They were driving at 100kmh down country roads. By making powernaps illegal, there will be more tired people behind the wheel, meaning more accidents, and an increase in the road toll. A ridiculous law

A work mate of mine years ago was charged and lost his licence for drink driving.

He had a night out with the boys, was feeling a little too ****ed to drive so he thought he'd have a little sleep, his main mistake was to get the car running to get the heater warm. the cops came along saw him asleep in the back of the car parked in a carpark, pulled him out, woke him up and breathe tested him, charged him, went to caught lost his licence.
They said at the time it was illegal to be intoxicated in a car if the keys were in the car at the same time as it means you are in charge of the vehicle.

This rule is stupid. Very stupid.

I think the main concern is that when people are asleep in their car, people may fear they are dead, whether by gasing themselves or maybe through drugs. But that may be the concern.

But frankly, so what? If people want to knock themselves off, that's their privilege in a country like Australia.

My car, parked legally with no time restrictions means I can park it there as long as I want and when I am in my car, I can do what I want as long as it isn't harming others. I'm sorry if I snore a bit loud, but the Mayor isn't any better.

Yeah, bloody stupid. If it becomes Victorian legislation, Peter Bachelor and Steve Bracks will be the most popular duo in state politics ever.

I thought this was common law. You can not even sit in drivers seat without keys if intoxicated.

I wonder if this will apply to long haul interstate truckies?? I'd much rather see them sleeping on the side of the road than be high on stimulants to meet their deadlines...

i think the law can go suck my c*ck!! these type of laws are what people get ****ed of about and are then more likely to go and break more laws just to show that they can.
its bulls h i t, sleeping in your car is illegal but fatigue kills heaps of people every year. so : happened to a 15 powernap could save your life. man id love to meet the ******* who make up these laws, they'd be getting a few of :jab: and :the_finge to their faces!
