There are a couple of grooves on the road that measure how fast your wheels go over it, if you go over them too fast, itll set the camera off. You can usualy see where the grooves are as they are usualy in a newer piece of bitumen, which looks like a strip across the road.

ur - your.. 2 extra keystrokes and we are all happy!
Depends on which state, but my understanding was that most fixed camera's are directional, aka if in the left lane outbound, it wont cover cars on the opposite side of the road inbound.

the strips are almost inline with the cameras, there easy to see. saying that though, i still havent seen them in the Sydney Harbour tunnel, as there is some hidden cameras in there, somewhere.

when you go past one next time slow down and look just past the cam on the road there should be 3 or 4 silver strips in the road (like the road has been cut and filled with metal) once you get passed the sensors (if you're not speeding) they cant catch ya. :

Oh jeeze this will end in blood. I wouldnt take him on.
Anyway the cameras are directional. As people have said you can see the sensitive strips in the road. If there are two cameras, One on each side of the road then yes they will zap you. |

90% of cameras are directional. when they are facing away from you (ie photo rear of car) is when they can catch you.....
Something with privacy act... However, new IR ones work both ways (uni directional) and get the front or rear plates. End of the day, go 3 kms under speed limit (or on speed limit as the bullshit BA speedo reading) and drive 30 metres past, then off you go... Assuming you aren't speeding....

in NSW, instead of looking for the strips on the road near the camera, just keep your eye on the 3 signs that say SPEED CAMERA AHEAD ##KM, there about 100m apart, before the camera.
not too sure what its like in other states. |

In NSW anyway, (from RTA website as far as I know) our camera's can track 3 lanes each and direction doesn't matter. They can photo you in either direction, so watch your speed either way.

A good freind of mine works in the IT industry in MLB. The company that he works for is pitching a new system of speed control and fine processing to the VIC government. You Victorians are gonna love this. It comes in the form of a small box about the size of a cancer stick packet. It has a built in GPS and data base of all Australian roads with all speed zones included. It has the ability to email any incidence of exceeding the speed limit on any road in Australian back to the Vic government for "processing". This of course means generating a fine and posting it off to you. All it needs is a internet hot spot to keep in touch. And it can store any vialation if you are in the bushh until you are in a hot spot.
The companies own figures show that within 6 months around 40% of all drivers will have had their license suspended. On this point, I would challenge ANY driver to go out for a drive, long or short, and not slip over the posted limit at least once. It is possible to loose your license in three short drives... The unit will cost about $500 and will need to be installed as part of your rego renewal. Cost can be spread out over 3 years...... Bracks has kept this VERY quiet...... Enjoy Mexicans!! But, given time it will be in evry car in Australia. So I think that all this talk about speed camera's is going to be very irrelevant soon.

As shown below. Theres the camera, theres the camera watching the camera, sometimes there is a radar as well (not shown) then the lines on the road. There normally placed where the camera is facing.
As for "it can't get you when you're facing the camera", remember you're in a public area. Doesn't mean crap. Heres a list of speed cameras for NSW: http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/roadsafety...ons/index.html |

I don't know how serious that post is meant to be but it wouldn't surprise me if Bracks went for something like that. IMHO, he would see crippling the state as a small price to pay for ideological compliance....

I actually think the black boxes are te bees knees. If everyone had to have one, everyone would lose thier licence pretty quickly. That makes for one hell of a lot of civil disobedience because no-one would stop driving. I think it would act as a catalyst for the general public (I do not hoon so I am safe) mentality to be shaken up. Further, if the road toll failed to come down, it makes it pretty hard to keep justifying the speed kills crud.
