Default AU Fairmont V8 Exhaust Mods

I am currently in the process of changing my exhaust on me old 5.0L AU Fairmont however am not sure what is best. I have been advised that extractors, a 2.5" system mandrel bent to straight through muffler, and hi flow cat converter is they way to go?

I would appreciate any comments from people who may have this set up and whether it is worth the 1500 bucks I have been quoted to do the work?

I've got the same sort of system on mine. All Herrod. Extractors, high flow cats and a single 2.5" system and I'm happy with it.

I would go 3" single, or twin 2.25" or 2.5". In fact on my XR I have Herrods 4into1s, twin 2.5 into the cats, then twin 2.5" into a collector and into single 3" (single goes from under drivers seat to the tailpipe).

Pacmaker Tri-Ys are the way to go in terms of extractors, though the 4into1s also work well. No need to replace the cats really - just an unneccesary expense. You just get them to cut the inlet and outlet on the cats back so that they open up to 2.5" and then they weld a 2.5" flange on each end. The stock cats flow well enough, and only need replacing if they are actually buggered.

Paccies are around $800 to $900 fitted, plus single 3" at around $500 fitted. Single 2.5" would be around $300, so for a twin 2.5" you should be looking at around $600. So a budget of $1500 keeping your existing cats should be sufficient.

Their's been a fair bit of debate over recent times about exhaust systems on V8's and everyones got an opinion. As they have a right to have. Remember that bigger is not always better and you need a system to allow for what you want to do with the car, all out raqcing requires evacuation of the spent gasses quickly but on the street you need some backpresure to allow for a better drive. You alos have to remember that the exhaust flow actually slows down as it trangresses throught the system which is why you see alot of systems reducing in size over length. That said extractors, a cat and a 2 1/2 should suffice for the street, give you good drive and a great note.

The above advise looks good.

I'd go twin 21/2's cats back, single muffler on each pipe & pacemaker tri-y headers... works good on mine & sounds awsome :
