Hey all,
This is the dumbest plan possibly but i will like to see if anyone has any ideas... The plan is a wire a switch into the car which will essentially override the TPS. Then from my new in car controls, I can manually make the car kickdown / Upshift and do other funky things... Here is a list of what I know and what I dont know... KNOW... 1. Kickdown operates when a voltage is sent via the TPS. (If i place a resistor in the line to slightly reduce the voltage, it will stop kickdown) 2. I can wire up a line to send the kickdown voltage from the TPS (hence forcing a downshift). 3. I can possibly hook up a switch so I can make upshifts at the reqired voltages. DONT KNOW... 1. What is the wiring diagram for the TPS (3 pins, what do they do ?) 2. No idea what damage can be caused to the tranny 3. What the exact voltages are / what signals are sent. If anyone has any idea, it would be much apprciated. Cheers, Aaron.

So basically you want to make something like the ESS system on the T series or the SSS on the BA/BF.. thats already in existence.. and has been done a number of times????

Pin 2: Signal Pin 3: V5+ 2: NFI 3: the TPS operates between V0.5+ (FCT) to V4.9+ (WOT) there are 5 solonoids controling the transmission, 1 for each gear and 1 for line pressure. i can get u all the pin outs if u need, however i would recommend some more research into your idea, before damaging something

would it not be easier to upgrade to a ba sportshift box? add a piggyback chip to tell ecu the box is ok and compatible?if doable would look better then a set of paddles and/or toggle switches.

Well you can do that but when I want to kick down in a hurry I just drop the shifter back to 2nd / 1st

If you are after paddles the new Mitsubishi Outlander had some alloy paddles fitted to it. They are fixed to the steering column. Could be a cool mod.

Having a read through, i think the objective of this mod isn't so much the kickdown, what you really want to achieve is to be doing say 70km/h in 3rd gear and just boot it and it will hold the gear like a manual and not change by itself. BA's use this and i think the T3's.

I was thinking either paddle shift (which will mean I will have a hack-manual style) or a pedal (like modding the manual pedal box) where the "clutch" will infact lock out the kickdown/upshift and therefore hold gear until i release it, ad when I release it, it will then pick the right gear. This is more the planned system as all im after is to hold gears rather than force changes. I have run the car with the TPS and then disconnected it completly to see the effects. If I cant figure it out now, I will go for a ESS system through the +/- volume control. Although the "pedal" system will be optimal outcome for holding gears.

The TPS controls kickdown yes but it does not keep the car from changing to the next gear at the appropriate speed, that is either speed or revs... I would suspect speed
i.e. if you put your foot to the floor it is still going to change gears just before redline however to test your theory you could put in a clutch pedal and a cruise control clutch switch to switch a relay that d/c the TPS and runs it via a variable resistor - hook +5 to one of the outside terminals, 0v to the other outside terminal and the sensor line to the middle terminal, then adjust it until you get the effect you are after - but be aware that if you use it too much the ECU is going to learn what is happening and make the ride uncomfortable when you are just cruising |

This is EXACTLY what I want to do... I'm sick to death of the car holding gears too long, and dropping down unnecessarily. I would love to use the volume buttons, but I don't know a thing about the trans electronics or how on earth to go about it.
If you get it working au_rocket, I'd love to hear how ya went Cheers nic |
