Hi Guys,
My 'other' car (apart from the coupe) is the family AUII Falcon - 04/01 - bout 95k on the clock. Just came over to my inlaws house for some lunch and the transmission is playing up bad. First time its happened. This is what i've got - can anyone help? 1. It all started after - sitting on 60kmh - car climbs in revs for a short minute and im like "What the?...". Didnt feel the gears change around or anything - but it must have gone back a couple of cogs? 2. Immediately after I lose the speedo AND odometer. 3. Car doesnt seem to find 4th gear? I can feel it go through all three gears but not the final - regardless of speed. 4. Car is very doughy off the start. Revs dont match road speed. Even if I floor it car doesnt jump at all. 5. However if I manually select 1st - then hit it - it will break traction So - my thoughts are either ECU related? (are the speedos cable driven in these things or electronic?) OR Torque converter. Again Im not sure if these are electronically controlled? But it isnt engaging properly with my test between putting it in D and accelerating hard (and it goes nowhere) or selecting 1st manually and accelerating hard and its fine. All help appreciated! It will be going in to the mechanics tomorrow but I like to have my homework done before doing so. Cheers, Coupsta |

My tranny just stuffed up recently. It was slipping out of gear/ revs kept building. Took it down to the auto shop, had a new rear seal put in and service. Its been pretty good after that... Hope this helps??

Im positive it is in 'limp home mode'.
Checked fuses - none blown. Apparently it can also go into this mode if the battery is low. |

So you've lost the speedo???
That's the transducer (speed sensor) on the side of the gearbox, when this goes the car goes into limp mode, basically stuck in third. It's a cheap and easy fix. Mine went at about 60,000 k's was doing 100km/h then the speedo read 150, 180 then zero. Drove it 30k's home in third, drove very poorly, naturally.

Yes Au2falcons - speedo gone! And odometer? (good way to cheat some K's and get great economy per tank! jokes)
Four words I love in your post "cheap and easy fix". So I could buy one of these transducers or its still recommended to drop it into my mechanic? |

If you can see the odometer but the k's aren't adding on the it's the speedo sensor, it's not sending a signal to the cluster which sends the trans in to limp mode. You can get a new sensor from ford (i think they are worth about $80). The sensor is located on the right hand side of the trans, at the rear just about the rear mount and cross member. Disconnect the wiring, undo the retaining bolt and pull the sensor out.
If you can't see the odomoter at all, you must have a wiring problem or cluster problem which would need to be looked at by ford or an instrument repairer.

Thanks to Tech Trainer on PM and Au2falcons help on this one.
Its currently at a Ford service centre so we'll see how it pans out. Yes the odometer is still visible - but just not adding the K's on. So fingers crossed it is just this speedo sensor on the box and im not up for big coin. |

Hope this is the fix for it ... it sounded like mine was starting to play up (prior to replacing the auto anyway).
At idle and in Park ... my speedo would jump between 0 and 20km/h ... while stationery with the handbrake on ... Found on the scan tool that the ECu had picked up a code (?1358 .... which is the transmission speed sensor). Well ... I don't have the issue now though ... as I said I have a new transmission in the ute and all is good.
