Well, my car's in impound....

Yes, I'm sure we all read the title and thought to yourselves "####in# Idiot!" and yes, that's exactly what I am.

Leaving the local service station at 1:45AM on thursday there were a group of people drinking etc with a group of cars. I ignored it on the way in and on the way out I got the yelling "Comeon, smoke it up, you wont".

Anyway, the road was wet and I booted out of the corner and onto the main road, drifting sideways andfishtailed up the road. I got the applause from the crowd, followed by red and blue lights in my rearview - Ahhh, I died in the ***....

There was no traffic on the road, no parked cars or people and I was on my own.

They searched the car and got me to drive it back to the impound (wtf, they let _ME_ drive it back?) and I didn't even get breathoed or bloodtested!!!

I deserve it - and I'm pleding guilty in court. But one thing that does get under my skin is that they're charging me 15 dollars a day while it's there. That's $1350 for 3 months, plus my $450 dollar fine. That's $1800!!!

I thought the fine itself was the punishment, but aparently not!

I'm hoping to have the car out within a week though because it's regoed in my parents name, and they're claiming they need it for work etc.

I dont see how they can take what appears to be my mothers car off her for something I done - It's outragouse.

Anyway! I wont even be doing 10 over from now on as I will only have 1 point remaining, and if I am ever caught again the car will be forfited (handed over to, sorry for spelling) to crown and sold.

I hope I get it out within a week, hopefully I get breathoed my the same coppers on the day I get it out - They wont be happy.

Anyway! There's my story... :P

Dude

The fact that you are intelligent enough and introspective enough to realise the errors of your way is a good start.

We hear so many horror stories about road trauma these days it makes your blood icy cold.

Hopefully you've learnt your lesson both morally and financially.
The experience now may save you later from something far worse..........

What state are you in Victoria?
I would have thought you'd only lose your license and get a fine, which has been the case for a couple of guys around here.

I live in a country town in NSW, and this is my first offence for _any_ driving violation, and I have a clean record otherwise.

As said above, stupid move but good to see that you have learnt from it. Thanks for sharing it as well, I didn't realise the huuuuge financial cost of having it impounded!

But you make a good point though about it being registered in your parents name. What are the implications if someone was driving their father's company car which is required for regular driving duties? Surely it is not reasonable for the government to take the car at the expense of a company not related to the incident? I can see a few of these cases appearing, there may be some interesting precedents set in the future.

I thought it was 3 offences before they sell it.

Is it just the car that is black listed or you the driver??

Like can you have been done 2 times then be done in 15 years time driving a different car and have that confiscated and sold due to the 2 offences that happened all those years ago?

"The road transport (general) Act 1999 provides for the impounding of a vechicle used for any practice prohibited under section 40 and 41 (Wheelies, burnouts, donuts, actual street racing) of the Road Transport (Safety and Traffic Management) Act 1999. The impounded car may be kept by police until the offence has been dealt with by law or until the statutory period prescribed has expired. For a first offence, the vehicle is automatically liable to impounding for 3 months. For a second or subsequent offence, the vehicle is liable to forfeiture to the Crown"

ive snipped bits that arent important and highlighted some of it

they are the rules, they'll take whatever car you're in that you do something stupid in, and charge you by day for the impounding....

i thought everyone knew that already

yep, vic is
offence 1 - 3 days
offence 2 - up to 3 months
offence 3 - loss of vehicle

nope, the car didnt do the offence, the driver did.... they'll just look at your reccord and realise you've had a car taken off you already

gusty post man! I doubt there are many here who havn't done something simular in their days (including me) all that said I have as I'm sure most others have, headed the warnings and now consider it 'not worth the risk' So yep, your exactly right .......

No, even if I'm in another car later on and throw something silly again, the current car will be taken (from what I understand).

It has nothing to do with the car itself, taking the car just a punishment if anything, and no record will stay "with that car".

in SA i know it is 48 hours first offence because i was stupid enough for doing a stupid act.

i went to court about 5 months later, got a $266 fine and 3 points off my licence.

did you try telling them that due to the wet conditions and the fact that you were turning caused the car to accidently lose traction. surely you told them it was your mum's car and you're not used to driving it.

'sorry officer i didn't realise the wheels were spinning as i had the windows up and the radio on. i wondered why i wasn't going anywhere. thanks for pointing that out and i'll keep an ear out for it in the future. have a nice night'.

if only it was that easy. maybe once upon a time. all messed up nowadays with speed and hooning taking the fall for every infringement on the road.

It's a bit hard when I had a big angle drift (they were looking at my doors) followed by consecutive fishies...

And I didn't have a chance... I wound down the window and as soon as he came up to it, without saying anything, he pulled the keys out of the ignition and sat them on the roof, and opened my door and told me to get out and walk towards the back of the car. Then he searched it while the two other officers were just standing in the rain with me...

I agree

They make you pay big time because generally spekaing it's the only way one learns from their mistakes - demerit points can be handed over to someone else to take - $$$ aren't.

I can only assume (and hope) that if the car is indeed your folks, they tear you a new one before EVER letting you get back in the car again.......

That being said, you are a goose, but one that is big enough to admit it, and that is more than many many others.
