Geeze, an interesting read....
Wonder if the Hyundai driver was just really reeeeely good, or all of the drivers of the other cars were shockingly crap! http://www.caradvice.com.au/2557/hyu...arga-tasmania/ |

Consistency is the key.
The only Hyundai I'd want to own would be the Tiburon. I wonder where it would be without the 4 min penalty |

Jim Richards has said that the key with road rallies is not to tackle them at 10/10ths like you would on a circuit, because there is no run-off and a lot of trees to hit and gullys to fall down if you screw up. He seems to build up a bit of a lead when it’s safe then back off to about 8 or 9/10ths (which would probably be about 25/10ths for me).
In the 2000 (?) TT Greg Crick was in a DC2 Honda Integra Type R (with a modified intake and exhaust and RE540s tyres) and he was almost matching the times of JR’s and Fitzgeralds Porsche 911 GT3’s. At first glance you could assume that the Honda was the equal of the Porsches but I think that the reality was that if JR and PF were driving at 8/10ths then GC was driving at 13/10ths. http://www.autoweb.com.au/cms/A_5249...wsarticle.html Maybe the Tiburon drivers were doing the same thing (driving above 10/10ths)

If you hot them up there not slow. They crank out same 0-100 as a VX Commodore. 9 seconds. There not a slow car. All the reviews say there an aswome sports car.

They are nice-looking things and they are pretty well put together but from all reports I've read they possess pretty ordinary steering feel and feedback, poor driving dynamics and the engines are flat and lifeless.
Obviously they are close to the mark though as Targa lets you muck around a bit with struts, bushes and brakes and they must have got them going pretty well. Beautiful looking things though. ...Ben |

The Tiburon beat 13 of 20 Porsches, 13 of 19 Lancer Evo 4WD turbos, seven of 11 Nissan Skyline GTRs, six of nine Subaru WRX STi 4WD turbos, six of eight supercharged Cooper Ss, both BMW M3s and Celica GT4 turbo 4WDs and one of the two Lamborghinis. What I will bet on is that its the drivers of the cars that don't want to be known with double or tripple the HP, AWD and the keys to some of the worlds most regarded racing thoroughbreds having to admit to being beaten by the Hyundai! : I also remember another Targa race where a car went very well indeed, I think it was a black Torana or an SLR that was a $5000 trade in for a new car.?? |

I completely agree with you guys that Hyundai are seriously getting their act together. If they stuck a really good turbo engine and maybe an AWD drivetrain with better suspension geometry in a Tiburon I reckon they'd be on a winner, expecially in light of the bloody ugly 4WD turbo cars we are being lumbered with these days. ..Ben |

They mentioned the near stock V6 up front, but they neglected to mention the 2.0L turbo revving away driving the real wheels! |

Didn’t he drive a Volvo 242T at Bathurst years ago? If it’s the same guy I’m thinking of he was a good steerer and it is no surprise that he is up at the pointy end.
I have a vague memory about a rumour that he was going to run a Pantera (twin turbo?) in a previous Targa Tassie.

if they asked me to do the targa in a getz i'd jump at the chance!

There is something about Hyundais. It's as though they take a normal car and wave an ugly stick over it. They just look wrong. Remember their precision driving team?

I followed Targa around for the entire week and the car was fast. I chatted to the navigator at the after party, who was a really nice guy. He reckoned that they flogged the car rear hard, but the car has never broken down and has basically not been touched since it's first Targa which was many years ago now. The driver Andrew Miedecke should be well known. He had a solid career in Formula Ford, Formula Two and Formula Atlantic, before racing overseas and later returning to Australia to race touring cars. |

Good luck to them. There's no reason why a Korean car company can't make something with quality and reliability like some Japanese manufacturers. They just need to shake their image.
I remember a few years ago sitting in a Tiburon and Sonata being astounded by the sudden increase in build-quality - we used to own a '97 Sonata and it was a heap. A lot has changed. In saying that, I don't see myself buying one! Does anyone know if the other competitors had mechanical problems/failures??

Your right Hyundai are one of the dark horses to look out for in the future.
You have to say though its a good effort for the hyundai and yes it beat some 911s and what not but the question would be why they were so low down in the first place. My guess is that they had a few dramas. |

Andrew Meidecke campaigned the white ANZ Sierra RS Cosworth in the ATCC for a couple of years. If memory serves he very nearly won Bathurst but was forced out late with some gremlin.

Some pretty narrow minded comments on this thread. I guess most would be surprised to learn that the fastest car (23 outright stage victories out of 43 stages) at the 2007 Targa Tasmania was powered by a 2 litre normally aspirated 4 cylinder.
Other cars that beat the Tiburon include: 1970's & 80's Porsches, a heavily modified Monaro, a pretty standard looking Holden Torana and a Mazda 3MPS. |
